Read in August, Part 01

  1. Batgirl, Volume 1: The Darkest Reflection – Gail Simone, Adrian Syaf & Vicente Cifuentes.  This filled in some gaps for me since I read volume 2 first, like a total genius.  Enjoyable.
  2. Catwoman, Volume 4: Gotham Underground – Ann Nocenti, Rafa Sandoval & Jordi Tarragona.  Nope.  I like Catwoman as a character but this collection did her no favours.
  3. The Invisible Library – Genevieve Cogman.  A secret organisation of librarians travels to parallel universes to retrieve important literary works.  So far, so good but this never really grabbed my attention.  It reminded me a lot of The Chronicles of St Mary’s series by Jodi Taylor, but it lacked the humour and fast-paced tone that make those books so much fun to read.  There’s a sequel but I’m not tempted.
  4. Shattered – Teri Terry.  A satisfying conclusion to this dystopian YA trilogy, where misbehaving teens have their memories wiped.  Recommended!
  5. All Our Yesterdays – Cristin Terrill.  Em travels through time to try to prevent a war.  So far, so straightforward, but this is a wonderfully nuanced read that grabs you by the heart and doesn’t let go.  Also recommended!

Read in August, Part 02

  1. The Ship – Antonia Honeywell.  I hadn’t planned to read three dystopian novels in a row but sometimes you get a theme and you stick with it without realising what you’re doing.  I picked this up at random from the library and ended up staying up late to finish it.  Britain is dying and a select few are chosen to leave the chaos behind on a well-stocked ship that sets sail into an uncertain world.  But as the years pass by, one passenger starts to question where they’re going and what they’re going to do when they get there.  Loved it.
  2. The Dragonfly Pool – Eva Ibbotson.  Although I enjoyed this it was loooong.
  3. Nicola Goes to the Oberland – Josephine M. Hardman.  Although not the best written Chalet School fill-in I’ve read (it was self-published rather than coming from Girls Gone By), I liked this well enough.  I’ve always enjoyed reading about St. Mildred’s and was a fan of Nicola herself so I was willing to give it a pass on a lot of its weaknesses.
  4. Sinner – Maggie Stiefvater.  When Cole was first introduced in this series, I hated him because he’s just such a cliché, but he grew on me pretty fast.  There’s not much original happening in Sinner (Cole is a celebrity with celebrity issues and Isabel is a normal person with normal issues – how will they ever meet in the middle??) but it has a charm worth sticking around for.
  5. Frank Miller: The Art of Sin City – Diana Schutz (ed.).  A good overview of the process behind the Sin City series.
